A Thanksgiving Experience Essay Coming to the United States as an international student from Sweden, I got introduced to many new traditions and holidays. Some of these holidays are also celebrated in Sweden, for example Christmas and Easter, even if we might celebrate them a little differently. But, I also got to experience new and different traditions. One of the new traditions I got to experience was how to celebrate a real American Thanksgiving. The first time I celebrated it, I was 17 years old and didnt think too much of it. Of course, I thought that it was nice to get some time off from school and have a delicious meal, but there wasnt much more to it than that. But now, a couple of years older, living on my own, far away from my family, Thanksgiving has gotten a whole other meaning to it, and I absolutely love this holiday. To me, Thanksgiving is a time to spend with the family, a time to show them how thankful you are for having them, and a time to tell them how much you appreciate them. Since my own family is in Sweden there was no question of where my boyfriend, Ryan, and me were going to spend Thanksgiving this year. His family lives in Connecticut so we packed our bags and flew up to the chilly but absolutely gorgeous little state in the North East. I have been there many times before and every time his parents welcome me with open arms, like I am one of their own. This makes me feel like I really am part of the family and that I belong there for this holiday. We stayed at their house and they served us like it was their job. On Thanksgiving Day we left for an early lunch at the Grandparents house and after that we went to the other Grandparents to have dinner. That way, we got to see the whole family on Thanksgiving Day, and that was our goal. Even if we had to spend some time driving around, it was well worth it as we got to see how our appearance made everybody feel happy. If our appearance made everybody else happy it was nothing compared to how it made us feel. Both Ryan, and me were ecstatic that we were able to come home and be with the family on this day and we were determined to show them how thankful we were for having them. But, Thanksgiving is not a time where you show other people your appreciation by buying them gifts, like you do for Christmas, so instead we tried to simply make sure that we acted, and told, everybody how thankful we were for having them. There are lots of ways you can show people you appreciation. This Thanksgiving, for example, I said a Swedish prayer before dinner, even though Im not very religious at all. But, Ryans grandfather was born in Sweden, and wished to hear some Swedish, so I thought it was a good opportunity to make him happy, and I was right. The only thing this old man wanted to talk about for the rest of the evening was my prayer. It was nice to see how something so simple could make someone so happy. Making people happy and show them how thankful you are for having them is nice, but I feel that the most important thing is to tell people that are close to you how much you love and appreciate them. Acting and telling people that are close to you, how much you love them are something you should always do, but somehow it seems to be easy to treat the ones you love carelessly every now and then. Therefore it is nice to have at least one day when you really think about how you act and what you say. Thanksgiving, I think, is a great opportunity for doing just that. Medieval Literary Drama Medieval Literary Drama Dialectic and Spectacle in the Harrowing of Hell Roland Barthes's essay on "The World of Wrestling" draws analogically on the ancient theatre to contextualize wrestling as a cultural myth where the grandiloquence of the ancient is preserved and the spectacle of excess is displayed. Barthes's critique -- which is above all a rewriting of what was to understand what is -- is useful here insofar as it may be applied back to theatre as another open-air spectacle. But in this case, not the theatre of the ancients, but the Middle English pageant presents the locus for discussing the sport of presentation, or, if you prefer, the performance of the sport. More specifically, what we see by looking at the Harrowing of Hell -- the dramatic moment in the cycle plays that narratizes doctrinal redemption more graphically than any other play in the cycle -- as spectacle offers a matrix for the multiple relationships between performance and audience and the means of produci ng that performance which, in turn, necessarily produces the audience. The implications of the spectacle could sensibly be applied to the complete texts of the cycle plays, and perhaps more appropriately to the full range of the pageant and its concomitant festivities. The direction of pseudo-historical criticism, especially of the Elizabethan stage, certainly provides a well-plowed ground for advancing the festive and carnivalesque inherently present in the establishment and event of theater. Nevertheless, my discussion here is both more limited and more expansive: its limits are constructed by the choice of an individual play recurrent through the four extant manuscripts of what has come to be called the Corpus Christi plays; its expansion is expressed through a delivery that aims to implicate the particular moment of this play in the operations of a dominant church-state apparatus, which is, ostensibly, a model of maintaining hegemony in Western culture. The Harrowing provides a singular instance in which the mechanisms of control of the apparatus appear to extend and exploit their relationship with the audience (i.e. congregation). The play is constructed beyond the canonized operations of the sacred, originating a narrative beyond (yet within) the authorized vulgate; it is constructed only through church authority yet maintains the divinely instituted force of the orthodox doctrine. Two introductory instances, one from the Chester cycle and the other from the Towneley cycle, situate the narrative and event of the play as a spectacle which engages the possibility of being consumed by its historical and particular mass culture -- a culture which was primarily illiterate in both the official and the vernacular writings of the church -- and being understood within the hegemonic orthodoxy. The introductory speech in the Chester Plays (The Cooke's Play) describes a previous knowledge that Adam -- as representative for a fallen humanity -- apprehends exactly a t the moment he articulates his speech: Nowe, by this light that I nowe see, joye ys come, lord, through thee, and one thy people hast pittye to put them out of payne. Similarly, though now through Jesus's self-proclamation, the introduction in the Towneley cycle reveals the already known nature of its narrative: A light will thay haue To know I will com sone; My body shall abyde in gaue Till all this dede be done. The doubled "nowe" of Adam's speech and the perfected futurity of Jesus's speech dictate a time before narrative. Human-Centric Computing in Three Dimensions The object of any project designated as â€Å"human-centric† is to make computers more accessible to humans, and not to make humans more accessible to computers. It seems that in the twentieth century computers have developed and become slightly easier to use, but no more accessible than they were when they were first invented. This has become a problem, since using a computer is nothing more than using a few mechanisms that are not naturally used by humans, such as a keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Efforts have begun, though, to change the trend, making computers more natural for humans to use. There are many methods of making them more natural, such as voice-recognition, and even simpler items, such as more advanced search engines for the internet. Another good example of the new human-centric projects is an attempt to use recent technological advancements in three-dimensional graphics to make computers more user-friendly. All of these ideas can be brought to gether using new technology, but only if humans direct their progress towards the human-centric instead of techno-centric. One of these new three-dimensional attempts to make computers more human-centric is called Farsight nV, a project by the nVidia Corporation and the Quantum 3D Corporation. This project is utilizing the power of software and hardware made by the nVidia Corporation and integrating these elements into military and civilian vehicles. By using elements such as Synthetic Vision and â€Å"Highway in the Sky† flight guidance, the project will make vehicles safer and easier to use, all while enhancing the methods that humans use to interact with the computers embedded in the vehicles. These two elements utilize the latest enhancements and technology in the three-dimensional graphics field and make all of the menus and information the computers display many times easier to read and much more comprehensive for the user. The project will benefit humans â€Å"†¦by bringing the power of nVidia technologies into the cockpit and onto the dashboard-- greatly benefiting ev eryone who needs real-time 3D information while moving through the world."
